I would like to thank you for your review, Cindy. There is a lot we can take away from it to better serve our customers in the future. Ace Handyman Services is a true Time & Materials company as was communicated in our initial email response to you. This means we charge our customers for the time that it actually takes us to do a job and not on a fixed estimate or price basis. This typically works very much in favor of our customers over a fixed based / quoted price. This is particularly beneficial for larger projects where contractors often bake in large cushions of time. I know for your situation you feel that it did not serve you well and we are sorry for that. When you first contacted us, you gave us a rough list of what you wanted to have done. Kathy provided you an estimated range of 6-8 hours based on the information you provided. In hindsight, this range of time was too light. However, this was based on what you provided us. We do not provide a fixed based estimate as there are so many factors that cannot be planned for. In your job, yes, Matt deferred the plumbing to a plumber. He felt that your job required one. We leave it to the discretion of our craftsmen to make calls like that. Other factors for your job that we could not account for are the amount of time required to go up and down stairs to get tools, parts and materials, that also included having to install, remove and reinstall items per your direction and your revised needs. There was a need to go to the store too to get items that he did not have on hand. Then there were a few items that you added to your list of tasks. After the completion of the job, you asked us to provide you detail of all that was done, which we provided along with some estimated times for the completion of these activities using publicly available estimation tools. We showed you that Matt was able to get done the tasks you asked of him, that he agreed to do in a time that was well below the estimation tools quoted times. This leads us to your statement that we should send out an “estimator” to scope the total job. We typically do not do in-person estimates. We communicate to our customers that our craftsmen are dedicated to doing the work quickly and correctly, which is demonstrated by the many 5-star reviews our customers give us. When pressed to have someone look at a project, we charge a $75 consultation fee. Most customers opt not to have this. Since I am the one who would have looked at your project, and with the benefit of hindsight, I would have suggested that it would be roughly a day to a day and a half or 8-12 hours.... without the plumbing. With the plumbing I would have roughly said around two days of work. Our desire is to provide our customers with a best guess range of time based on all of the information we have at hand. Our Craftsmen are then tasked to calibrate and recalibrate with our customers on-site and make adjustments based on their experience and agreement with our customers. This means that often the range of hours needed for a job will vary from any previous estimate of time needed. For your projects, it appears we could have done a better job. We know that Matt was in contact with you as was Kathy throughout the job. We also know that there were some communication challenges with the call-masking that is used with our dispatch software. However, it does appear that we kept you appraised of the work that was being done and the time that was being used. That said, I think we could have done a better job. In conclusion, your review is a fair one, thank you for sharing. We could have and should have done a better job of updating the time required and resetting expectations as items were removed and added to the task list. That said, we do believe Matt did good work on your job, which you confirm in your review. The original estimate of time of 6-8 hours was never meant to be a fixed time estimate, as you indicated in your review; “I approved the job, knowing it could likely take longer”. We genuinely feel bad about the disconnect with the time expectation you had and what we were able to deliver. We work very hard to make sure our customers have pleasant and delightful experiences working with us. In your case, we missed and I am sorry for that.
